Rediscovering Your Authentic Self

“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are” Brenee Brown

When Spirits Are Flagging…

At a time when most workplaces are struggling to maintain morale, people need more than ever, to be seen for who they truly are.

Rather than backing off, we need to lean in, to support people to become more of who they really are, as we recognise and rekindle passions and reclaim what we are truly capable of.

Revealing The Authentic Self

Revealing the authentic self is a cornerstone of process-oriented coaching. It is something we emphasise not only for coaching clients, but as an important journey for emerging leaders and coaches to make. So what does the journey entail?

A Process Of Discovery

The process of becoming more authentically you is a journey toward the self. It is grounded in self-reflection, supported by questions such as:

  • Who am I?
  • What do I value?
  • Where do my passions and strengths lie?
  • What am I willing to commit to?

Eventually, more challenging questions emerge:

  • What have been the teachings of my life till now?
  • How has adversity shaped me?
  • How am I playing it safe?
  • What do I fear?
  • What no longer serves me?

And ultimately, it takes commitment:

  • Am I willing to back myself?
  • Can I dare to be different?
  • Am I willing to stand at the centre of my own life path?

Such enquiries surface formative influences and internal schema. We find ourselves re-examining old belief systems about who and how we ought to be. We begin to reality test taken-for-granted assumptions.

Authenticity requires courage. It is also deeply empowering, inviting us to exercise choice about who we want to be and how we want to show up.

When we genuinely see ourselves unencumbered by history and hurt, we are able to fully appreciate and tap into our gifts.  With non-judgemental support, we can begin to heal some of the hurt and confusion that has prevented us from being who we are.

As you start to recognise and consent to being you, you gain access to more of your potential. As will your staff.

Authenticity Isn’t About Self-Absorption

Paradoxically becoming more fully ourselves also makes us more available and accountable to others. The energy that was previously tied up in our self-doubt and internal conflict is freed up, allowing us to notice the impact our authentic self has on others.

Rather than hiding who we are, we are able to show up and engage in more honest conversations. We become less defensive and more open, because we fundamentally trust ourselves.

In coming to terms with the rich tapestry that is ourselves, we are able to enter into relationship with others more intentionally – knowing when, where and how much or how little of our secret powers might come in handy.

Taking A Structured Approach To Discovery

At GCI and CLE, our leadership development and coach training programs are therefore designed to help our graduates become more authentically themselves. Simply stated: you will bring more awareness to your role when you have more insight into yourself.

As your professional development path coincides with your personal growth and acceptance of self, you become more congruent. And that congruence will inspire trust and confidence in others.

In making the transformational journey yourself, you will build practical know-how in supporting the unique talents and passions to emerge in your direct reports and clients.
